Gabby Otchere-Darko: Insecurity shouldn’t prevent Africa from achieving interoperability

Mobile money interoperability enables traders and customers to make transfers between mobile money accounts held by different mobile money providers

The founder and executive chairman of the Africa Prosperity Network (APN), Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has said security threats should not be a barrier to rolling out interoperability across Africa.

Mobile money interoperability enables traders and customers to make transfers between mobile money accounts held by different mobile money providers.

Interoperability reduces the cost of initiating transactions across networks, as customers no longer need the services of a third-party payment provider to initiate transfers across networks.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (30 January), Otchere-Darko said that rolling out interoperability across Africa will be a “game changer”.

“The country with the highest incidence of terrorism in the world is the US, yet they have one interoperability ecosystem,” Otchere-Darko said.

“Within the European Union, they have one interoperability ecosystem. So we shouldn’t use national security, threats of an exaggerated enemy, to prevent us from using technology to advance the push for shared prosperity on the continent,” the APN chairman said.
