Veteran highlife musician, Rex Owusu Marfo also known as Rex Omar, has said Shatta Wale is into highlife and not dancehall as being projected in the music circles.
Rex Omar says he had a tough time convincing his father to venture into music as a career due to the perception that musicians then were poor.
In an interview with Asaase Radio on Wednesday (16 August) Rex Omar said Shatta Wale genre of music could be described as “bad boy highlife” because of its uniqueness.
Bad Boy highlife
“If you listen to Shatta Wale, he is like me when I started; he is always trying to do something different but because we will not endorse and accept it as highlife, he decided to call it dancehall.”
He said, “But listen to all his songs, 80% of his songs has elements of highlife. So if we had all embraced it as highlife, we would have given it a new lease; we could have called it bad boy highlife.”
