Ghana at 65: Success of Ghana doesn’t depend on government in power, says Jantuah

According to the private legal practitioner, the success of the country depends on the patriotic fighting spirit of its citizens and taking responsibility for their actions

Story Highlights
  • This year’s Independence Day anniversary parade will be held in Cape Coast on Sunday, 6 March after a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The event which will be graced by the Prime Minister of Barbados Her Excellency Mia Mottley is on the theme “Working Together; Bouncing Back Better”.

Kwame Jantuah, a private legal practitioner has said the development of Ghana does not reside in whichever political party take the reins of government and steer its affairs.

According to him, the success of the country depends on the patriotic fighting spirit of its citizens and taking responsibility for their actions.

Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (5 March), Jantuah said, “the success of Ghana does not depend on the government in power. The success of Ghana depends on the citizens of the country and if the citizens of the country do not love each other, cannot bring the country first, cannot see the essence of a saving country and fight for the country, then it becomes a challenge. Because we tend to put so much reliability on political parties we vote into power.

“Some do it well, some don’t do it well. But we’ve got to get to a point whereas citizens, irrespective of the political party we support, we can point out the wrong of the government in power.”

Rectifying past mistakes

“Because a government in power is not only for the political party but a government in power is for the people of Ghana because the majority of the people would’ve voted for that government in power. Sixty-five (65) years down the road, my major interest is; after 65years going forward, can we rectify some of the things we’ve done wrong?”

He added, “That is important, how we bring the young ones up, how we play our politics, how we try not to have consensus on thoughts and ideas would determine how we move forward, Ghana is a beautiful country, Ghana is endowed with so many natural resources, the people have to come first.”

Responsibilities of politicians

“The politicians have a responsibility too, but their responsibility is to serve; we the politicians, our responsibility is to serve and leave a good name so that in future when we’re dead and gone, the citizens of that day will say this head of state, this individual, this political party moved our country forward”, he added.

The Central Regional Minister, Justine Marigold Assan has said that economic activities in the Central Region have received a major boost following the region’s hosting of the 65th Independence Day celebration.

“You know the 65th Independence Day didn’t just come here, in fact, the economic impact has been so great … I think getting into March, all hotels in the region have been booked fully, drivers, hairdressers, seamstresses, the artisans because they are working,” Assan told the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (4 March).”
