Ghana’s education system is doomed under Mahama, says Adutwum

Mahama recently chastised the government for pulling Ghana out of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) system

Yaw Osei Adutwum, the Minister of Education, has scolded the former president John Mahama over his latest comments suggesting Ghana is no longer taking part in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Mahama had chastised the government for what he described as pulling Ghana out of the WASSCE system.

According to the former president, the action by the current government has led to lower standards among Ghanaian students exiting secondary-level education and training. But, contradicting the former president’s assertion, Dr Adutwum said that Ghanaian students continue to write and excel in WASSCE.

Reacting to the former president’s claims on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (10 January), Dr Adutwum said the country will be doomed if Mahama is voted back into power.

“It is unfortunate. I am surprised. Has he been vice-president before? Did he sit in cabinet to be briefed? Our country’s future will be in dangerous hands if Mahama gets close to the presidency. He will destroy this country’s education system,” he said.

“It is so easy for him to call the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and ask them before going to make such a comment, without a briefing from WAEC. He is so wrong, I can’t even describe it.”

“Maybe he is not reading the newspapers, If he is, he would have heard or read that last year, [of] the top three students on WASCCE, two of them were from St James SHS.

“So, if we are not doing the same exams, how did they select two students from Ghana as the topmost?“ Dr Adutwum added.
