GHS: Non-communicable diseases could become a ticking time bomb in Ghana

The acting programme manager of non-communicable diseases of the Ghana Health Service, Dr Efua Commeh is advising the public to engage in healthy lifestyle to reverse the trend

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is advocating for an increased investment in tackling non-communicable diseases in the country.

The call comes in the wake of a recent upsurge in cases of death among the middle-aged population, raising concerns about healthy living practices.

Non-communicable diseases are diseases that cannot be transferred from one person to another, unlike infectious diseases. These include hypertension, heart attack, cancers, stroke, and diabetes.

Speaking to Kwaku Nhyira-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (11 March), the acting programme manager of non-communicable diseases of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Efua Commeh advised the public to practice a healthy lifestyle to reverse the trend.

“I believe that as a country, there is so much we can do, consciously putting in the effort to reduce the risk factors, creating an enabling environment by making it difficult for people to access unhealthy diets and giving school children healthy diets.”

“And also consciously investing in non-communicable diseases because if we are not deliberate, it’s just a ticking time bomb. A majority of youth are going to be down with one NCD and will affect our whole productive workforce,” Commeh said.
