Government moves to secure landing site for SAT-3

SAT-3 or the West Africa Submarine Cable is a submarine communications cable linking Portugal and Spain to South Africa, with connections to several West African countries along the route

Communications and Digitalisation Minister Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has declared the area of the landing site for the SAT-3 submarine cable on the High Street in Accra as a national asset.

SAT-3 or the West Africa Submarine Cable is a submarine communications cable linking Portugal and Spain to South Africa, with connections to several West African countries along the route.

Reports suggest a firm (name withheld) is claiming ownership of the site raising some concerns for further investigation to ascertain the rightful owner of the area.

Speaking to Benjamin Offei-Addo on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (19 February), Owusu-Ekuful said the government will secure the land because it has a unique purpose that will serve the telecommunication sector.

“There is one problem brewing around the landing site for SAT-3 which is near the old Ghana Telecom offices on the High Street which is being claimed by an organisation that the land belongs to them.

” … Some organisation which shall remain nameless for now claims that portion belongs to them, and it has come to my attention, and I have told them it is a critical national asset.”

” If indeed it belongs to them, and I’m not sure about that, they are doing the checks. So they can’t touch it, if indeed it’s proven that the land belongs to them, the government will take the necessary steps to secure it, which is critical for the delivery of telecoms network,” she said.
