Presidency must communicate more with public, says political analyst

Joshua Jebuntie Zaato also cautioned Parliament against undermining public trust in the Supreme Court

Joshua Jebuntie Zaato, a political analyst, has stressed the need for increased dialogue from the Presidency regarding recent legal controversies, emphasising the importance of public awareness.

Speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum on Saturday (30 March), Zaato emphasised the significance of the executive sharing its perspective on ongoing legal matters.

He pointed out that while Parliament regularly communicates its stance, it’s equally crucial for the government to engage with the public.

“The executive has a point; the executive has issues that they also need to communicate,” Zaato said.

“I would want and we need to see more of that communication because the executive has a position to defend and we need to see a very robust defence.”

Zaato highlighted the potential consequences of insufficient communication, noting that without a clear government stance, public opinion could become entrenched, leading to adverse outcomes for all parties involved.

“This whole caboodle is also aimed at one thing: framing and forming public opinion and how the opinion will look at the end of the day,” he stated.

“If this thing, no matter how long it lasts, if the public opinion becomes hardened on one particular issue, then you’ve lost both the war and the battle.”

Additionally, Zaato cautioned Parliament against undermining public trust in the Supreme Court through their statements.

He emphasised the importance of upholding confidence in the judiciary to maintain the integrity of the legal system.

“I think that the parliament to must be careful in the way they talk about the Supreme Court, it’s the last bastion of hope, it is the last place we ought to go to settle disputes,” Zaato said “If you successfully erode public confidence in the Supreme Court, if you successfully erode public confidence in the judicial system, if you confidently or successfully make people not to believe that the Supreme Court is an impartial arbiter in national issues then what is the alternative because you cannot on the one hand try to undermine such a big or such an important and critical system with your pronouncement and with your words because there are certain institutions that we should hold that high and one of them is the Supreme Court.”
