It takes hard work to rise, says Kweku Darlington

The fast-rising artiste says his music sounds different to Ghanaians because it is a fusion of drill and high-life

Everybody is dreaming to be big but it takes the hardworking ones to be up there, fast-rising Ghanaian rapper Kweku Darlington has said.

He shared these thoughts while speaking in an interview on Asaase Radio’s Between Hours with Naa Ashorkor.

The “Sika aba fie,” hit-maker noted that although a lot of people were doing music, what will set an upcoming artiste apart from the rest, is prayer, working hard, and learning different things.

“To be up and coming it’s all about hard work and prayers when you take God out, that won’t work, so you need to add God to everything that you do and to keep on pushing, to keep on pushing and try to learn different stuff … Ghanaians love listening to different ideas, new stuff,” Darlington said.

The latest rap sensation observed that Ghanaians readily accepted his music because they love listening to different things and his style of rap was different from the usual.

He explained that he learned “so many things that… wasn’t that common in the industry,” adding, “just listen to “Sika aba fie” … listen to the hook, the chorus, and everything … it wasn’t something Ghanaians have been listening to. Like it was different; the kind, the style of rap, how I rap it’s very different. So you need to be learning different stuff.”

He noted that while “people were doing the typical drill songs” because it was trending, he “decided to add high-life to make my sound different.” This was a step in the right direction as Ghanaians readily bought into the style.

He advised upcoming artistes to “try to think about something that’ll be new to the ears of the people.”

Fame has not changed me

Meanwhile, Darlington has revealed that even after attaining fame, “nothing has changed,” because he is “still the same.”

“It’s just my way of thinking that has changed a bit,” he noted, “because right now you need to think ahead.”

He shared that when he released his hit single “Sika aba fie” he had one sneaker. It was the same sneaker he “used for the video, it was the same sneaker I used for all the radio tour.”

“I didn’t rush to get these things… it got to a time… all these things were coming … So if you understand, it takes time, but you just need to be patient, you just need to be humble,” he advised.
