Just Us: Five notes on shooting your shot

Naa Ashorkor, the host of “Just Us” on Asaase Radio, shares five notes on shooting your shot

They say you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.

Over time, we are hearing more and more stories of women shooting their shots; whether it’s sliding into DMs of men, emailing prospective employers, networking, etc and making the first step in approaching them, in the hopes of romance, friendship or career / business opportunities..

This week on Just Us, my girls, Akua, Afua and I talk about the idea of shooting your shot to a prospective romantic interest where the woman takes the initiative to approach the man first, especially in a culture that does not encourage women shooting their shots or putting themselves forward especially in a romantic context.

1. CLOSED MOUTHS DON’T GET FED…

… in every literal way, from hustle to love to stomach! Be bold and audacious. When you find something, or someone you like, do not hesitate to express your feelings. Do not let the moment pass you by. We’re not saying you’ll get it all the time but open your mouth and ask!

2. CHANGE THE STATUS QUO

In a culture accustomed to men making the first move, or shooting the shots, women should be able to proposition prospective romantic partners and pursue relationships the same way men do!
You do not have to just settle for whoever propositions you. Be proactive, shooting your shot so you’re able to date people you are actually interested in, rather than responding to the people who have expressed interest in you.

3. BE CONFIDENT

Shooting your can be terrifying, lest you should be rejected but it gets easier the more you do it. Just radiate confidence and compliment your prospect boldly. They’ll be flattered at the very least! And the worst that can happen is a NO.

4. STRATEGIC POSITIONING IS KEY!

Shooting your shot does not always have to be a grand anxiety-inducing gesture. Sometimes, shooting your shoot is:
Walking in their line of sight
Liking a few IG photos
Complimenting their looks
A smile, a wink
Showing interest in the things they like…
Also known as Strategic Positioning 101!

5. SHOOT YOUR SHOT FOR EVERYTHING

Shooting your shot pays off, and this is not for just romantic relationships.
This is the year to open your mouth and ask for whatever it is that you want; shoot your shot for jobs, relationships, friendships, business partnerships, consulting gigs…just don’t be weird with it when you’re doing it.
Go out there, take action and give it a chance. Push through the risk of rejection and failure.
Hit or miss, it’s always worth a shot!
