Kaaka’s family to PIPS: Probe allegation of misconduct and bribery

The petition follows allegations of bribery against the police cited in the report of the ministerial committee set up to investigate the Ejura killings

The family of the late social media activist, Ibrahim Mohammed (alias Kaaka) has petitioned the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards (PIPS) bureau to probe allegations of misconduct against police officers in the Ejura violence.

It follows allegations of bribery against the police cited in the report of the ministerial committee set up to investigate the Ejura killings.

Civil unrest erupted in Ejura when a social activist, Ibrahim Mohammed “Kaaka”, 45, was attacked by unknown people on 27 June.

He died on Monday (28 June) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi, where he was receiving treatment.

Critical questions

A statement released by the family said the allegations raise critical questions about the integrity of the Ghana Police Service hence the call for the probe.

Below is the full statement:

This afternoon, the mother of Ibrahim Anyass Mohammed, alias Macho Kaaka served the Director of the Police Intelligence & Police Professional Standards (PIPs) with a petition to initiate an inquiry into allegations of Professional misconduct made against the Ejura Police.

The allegations which were made public by the Report of the Ministerial Committee set up to investigate the Ejura killings, concern claims by one Aminu Mohammed that the Ejura Police demanded and obtained a bribe in order to release from custody an individual against whom a criminal complaint had been made.

The allegations of corruption in the view of the mother of Kaaka, raise critical questions about the integrity of the Ghana Police Service. As such, the petition has been brought to initiate an inquiry into the allegations of criminal and professional misconduct made against the Ejura Police, and in order that the necessary criminal and administrative sanctions may be applied.

A copy of the Petition has been served on the Inspector-General of Police; Attorney-General; and the Minister for Interior.

Signed.
