Kumawu by-election: Battle lines drawn, six candidates on ballot

Unlike other balloting processes of the recent past, which were characterised by singing, drumming and fanfare, the exercise to choose positions on the ballot paper for the by-election was calm and quiet

The battle lines for the Kumawu by-election have been drawn, with six candidates picking positions on the ballot paper that will be used in the contest on 23 May 2023.

The balloting, which was held at the Sekeyere Kumawu District office of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Friday 5 May, was supervised by top officials from the election management body.

Whereas some aspirants took part in the balloting themselves, others delegated representatives to do so on their behalf.

Unlike other balloting processes of the recent past, which have been characterised by singing, drumming and fanfare, this exercise was calm and quiet.

GFP withdraws

The founder and leader of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Akua Donkor, could not file a nomination for her candidate, Isaac Boateng.

The Electoral Commission, which has officially closed nominations, is expected to publish the certified list of candidates and their positions on the ballot paper in the next few days.

Meanwhile, in separate interviews, some of the aspirants expressed delight about the places they picked on the ballot and justified their positions with biblical analysis and political interpretations.

Recall

Before adjourning sine die for the Easter holidays, Parliament notified the EC of the need to hold a by-election in Kumawu following the death of the MP Philip Basoah, who represented the seat on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The EC has set 23 May for the by-election.

Basoah, 53, sat as an MP in the seventh parliament of the Fourth Republic.
