NDC primaries: Muntaka retained in Asawase

There had been a massive campaign, prior to the election, to oust Mubarak from office

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Asawase, Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, has retained his seat to contest the 2024 general elections.
This is the sixth consecutive time for the politician. He polled 1,063 votes, beating his main contender, Mubarick Masawudu, who secured 735 votes.

The election was disrupted by heavy rains and, at some point, characterised by chaotic scenes when supporters of both candidates engaged in near fisticuffs. A heavy police deployment managed the situation.
There had been a massive campaign, prior to the election, to oust Mubarak from office. Some delegates called for change describing him as a low-performing lawmaker.
The MP had, earlier, said he was confident of a resounding victory.
“When Nana Akufo-Addo came and said we should change what we are seeing, has it been better or it has been worse between 2016 and now? I don’t think that person [my contender] knows what he is saying,” he said.
Muntaka also stated that, “I have been a distinguished parliamentarian. I have distinguished myself in the Ashanti Region, in Kumasi and within the NDC. What do you want to change to, from better to worse? I know that I have diligently served my party. I have served my constituency and I know that by the grace of Allah, they will reward me this evening.”
