A former deputy general secretary of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), Titus Beyuo has been elected as the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Lambussie Constituency in the Upper West Region.
Beyuo polled 446 votes to beat his main contenders – Dr Emmanuel Dery, who got (224) votes, and Dr Emmanuel Panyang, who secured 35 votes.
In a related development, Dr Zanetor Rawlings has been re-elected parliamentary candidate for Klottey Korle Constituency after securing 1,194 votes to beat her main contender Alfonso Nii Coleman, who got 360 votes.
More than 355,000 NDC party delegates took part in the voting process at 401 centres across the country for the ballot.
Done deal
The lead contender in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential primaries, John Dramani Mahama, is optimistic of ending the race with a landslide victory, calling on party supporters to rally for the task ahead in 2024.
The exercise was nearly stopped as a former aspirant Kwabena Duffuor went to court over alleged discrepancies in the electoral register. He reversed his decision earlier on Friday to place a court injunction on the primary race.
Duffuor, a former governor of the Bank of Ghana, withdrew from the race saying: “I wish to reiterate my commitment to the party and its grassroots. However, my concerns that the party is not ready to conduct free and fair election is evident for all to see.”
“Taking part in such would be akin to knowingly drinking from a poisoned calabash,” he added.
Nothing changes
Reacting to the claim ahead of casting his vote in Bole in the Savannah Region on Saturday (13 May), Mahama said Duffuor’s action “does not change anything.”
“We had expected to win by a landslide already and his [Kwabena Duffuor’s] withdrawal at the last minute does not change anything. The result is still going to be what it is. It will be overwhelming. It will be a landslide. Many delegates are unaware that he has withdrawn, therefore we are just looking forward to our win,” Mahama said.
Mahama is now contesting with a former Kumasi mayor Kojo Bonsu. He called on party supporters to remain united to ensure victory in 2024.
“The eyes are on the prize which is the 2024 elections, and we will leave no stone unturned to win that,” he said.
“I want to tell everybody in the party that 2024 is our main goal, so we should all come together, vote wisely and make sure that this party has the strength to fight in the 2024 elections very well. My expectation is that, after the election today, we will all support it, 2024 is our goal. My chances are very positive.”
