Nigeria urges joint force to safeguard West Africa’s telecom infrastructure

Amidu Maida, CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, has said the recent submarine cable cuts in 12 African countries raises the urgent need for the region to establish a mechanism to protect itself

Amidu Maida, the executive vice-chairman and CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission, has called for a coordinated approach by the West African region to protect their shared telecommunications infrastructure and bolster their connections to avoid possible interruptions.

This is against the undersea cable cuts, which created connectivity issues for several West African countries, including Nigeria.

Speaking at the West Africa Telecommunications Regulatory Assembly (WATRA) on Friday (22nd March), Maida stated that the recent submarine cable cuts in 12 African countries had raised the urgent need for the subregion to establish a mechanism to protect itself from damage to submarine infrastructure.

Securing telecom infrastructure is paramount for fostering Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and enhancing investor confidence in the West African sub-region. This will, in turn, spur economic growth and improve competitiveness on the global stage.

According to Maida, a coordinated, multilateral approach is needed to protect shared infrastructure across member nations. A framework for joint monitoring, risk mitigation, emergency response procedures, and improved disaster response protocols is also required.
