Nigerian artists are not better than Ghanaians, says K K Kabobo

The highlife legend says Ghanaian artists "need to market and brand themselves very well for people to trust and invest" in them

Ghanaian highlife musician, Kwabena Kwakye Kabobo, popularly known as K K Kabobo, has said Nigerian musicians are not better than their Ghanaian counterparts.

“Nigerians are not better than us,” Kabobo told Asaase 99.5 Accra‘s Winifred Lartey.

“We have talented musicians in Ghana, when we go to Nigeria, they always tell us that we are great artists. The thing is that Nigerians have sponsors, and if you have the talent and nobody is pushing you, everyone thinks others are better than you,” the Onyame Ehu Wu hit maker said.

Branding is key

According to him, “We need to market ourselves and brand ourselves very well for people to trust and invest in us.”

“Apart from that, their population is helping them, even Lagos is more populated than Ghana. So, if we had the population of Egypt or South Africa or USA, you can imagine how far we will go.”

Kabobo added that Ghana’s music industry focuses more on votes than talent.

“Another thing bringing our talents down is that we focus too much on votes instead of talent.”

“Giving an award to someone who had more votes instead of looking at how talented he is, is not right. It’s discouraging; someone may be talented, and because of votes, a well deserved award will be given to someone else,” Kabobo added.

Current state of highlife

The Onyame Ehu Wu hit maker, however, noted that highlife is still alive, but musicians need to modify it a bit.

“People also want to come out with their own genre, which is hard to accept, so if we want highlife to survive, we need to work harder, although in Ghana we have different rhythms,” the music legend said.
