Traditional leaders at Nogokpo in the Ketu South municipality of the Volta Region have accused the founder of Perez Chapel International, Archbishop Charles Agyinasare of denigrating the gods of the town.
Delivering a sermon in church to recall an experience after a crusade in Aflao recently, Agyinasare described Nogokpo as the “demonic headquarters” of the region after a near-tragic incident in the town.
Agyinasare has since come under heavy criticism with some describing his comment as unfortunate.
Addressing the media on Friday (2 June), the spokesperson for the traditional leaders, Nufialaga Mawufemor Korbla Nonyigbey gave Agyinasare a 14-day ultimatum to appear before them over his comment or risk the wrath of their gods.
“We the chiefs and people of Nogokpo give Archbishop Charles Agyinasare a 14-day ultimatum to meet us in person for a peace talk,” he said.
No slur
Meanwhile, Archbishop Agyinasare has said that he did not intend to cast a slur on the people of Nogokpo and the Volta Region with his “demonic headquarters” comment.
Reacting to the development in a statement on Sunday (28 May), Agyinasare said: “Any misrepresentation or misinformation that has characterised the subsequent commentary and reportage is regretted.”
“In reference to Nogokpo, I wish to clarify that I never intended to refer to the town but an incident that happened after a crusade at Aflao. I had absolutely no intention to cast a slur upon the people of the Nogokpo Town and the Volta Region as a whole.
“I have had a very cordial relationship with the people of the Volta Region. My wife of 38 years is an Ewe from Keta. And two of my sons bear Ewe names. All of the examples I gave were not intended to denigrate any of the towns and their people but to elucidate the principle of divine protection to congregants.”
