North East: Minister cuts short tour of region due to flood

Traveling to some parts of the North East Region this season with a vehicle or a motorbike has been difficult following the wash away of some major roads and bridges

The North East Regional Minister,Ā Yidana Zakaria, has had to cut short his tour after he was unable to cross to theĀ Yunyoo-Nasuan districtĀ to ascertain the flood situation in the region.

The minister, who was accompanied by the regional feeder roads manager, Meredith Kuunyem, the East Mamprusi Municipal MCE, Hajia Rashida Mahama, and the regional operations manager, Justice Awere, retreated to Nalerigu.

Ā After cutting short his tour, Yidana Zakaria made a pit stop in Yankazia to speak with some displaced flood victims who were being temporarily housed in a school building.

It was reported that, a man lost his life last week in an attempt to cross the floodwaters to his farm in the Yunyoo district.

“It is quite a disturbing situation. When we met the chief of the Gbintiri community, it was the very first time that it had come to my attention that we had lost somebody as a result of the flooding.

“When we attempted to move from Gbintiri to Gbeduri, we couldn’t cross because of the water and we saw it as very dangerous to cross,” Zakaria said.

“Our brothers and sisters who still risk their lives to move from the Gbeduri end to Gbintiri and vis-visa, they are only taking a risk that we could not stand, the reason why we have to cut short our journey, that is not a good piece of news.”

The residents are risking their lives in the water to salvage their immature crops to feed their families.
