Nzema East: Two Chinese nationals arrested for illegal mining

The Chinese nationals and their Ghanaian accomplices Gambo Akpandaa and Karim Abdulai are currently in police custody

Two Chinese nationals have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining in Kwakukrom in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.

Two of their Ghanaian accomplices were also arrested. They are Li Gou Hua, 40 years; Wei Hua Fen, 37; Gambo Akpandaa, 29 years and Karim Abdulai, 28 years.

The  suspects were picked up by the Nzema East Municipal Security Council on Tuesday (6 July) following a tip-off.

Items seized on site were 16 gallons of diesel, one water hose, one changfan motor and fuel pumping motor. Three excavators were also spotted at the site. The suspects have been handed over to the Regional Police Command for investigations and prosecution.

Warning

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to stop illegal mining to the detriment of the environment.

He said this is crucial due to the substantial revenue government continues to rake in from the mining activities in the country.

“Mining can create jobs, improve livelihood and generate wealth but it cannot and must not do so at the expense of damaging the very environment that produces the riches,” he said.

Akufo-Addo added, “We have to acknowledge that Ghana is not made up of only the humans but it is also made up of the soil, the mountains, and valleys, the forest, the rivers, seas, the lakes, the plants and animal life’s as well, without them, we humans cannot and will not survive and so they also need nurturing.”

The president said unacceptable mining and logging practices by some recalcitrant citizens have recently led to the pollution of many water bodies in the country.
