Ashanti Region: Student dies in fire ritual

Officials say the incident took place as Master Prosper Owusu, a third-year student, and fellow students of Opoku Ware II Hall were participating in activities around the hall premises in late August

Officials of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), have begun investigations into a fire-related incident that claimed the life of Master Prosper Owusu, a third-year student at the school.

Officials say the incident took place as Owusu and fellow students of Opoku Ware II Hall were participating in activities around the hall premises on the evening of Friday 25 August 2023.

The victim is said to have sustained injury in the mishap and was swiftly transported to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) to receive urgent medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to his injuries on 1 September 2023.

University authorities have since confirmed the incident in a statement published on the school’s website. They further cautioned the students to avoid activities that predispose them to risks and other dire consequences.

Mr Prosper Owusu, a third-year Mathematics Student of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), was among some students of the Opoku Ware II Hall, who were allegedly performing some activities in the Hall, on Friday, August 25, 2023.

Prosper got injured and was sent to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) immediately for medical attention. He was reported dead on September 1, 2023.

The issues surrounding the incident at the Hall are being investigated. Management will give further updates.

Meanwhile, students have been cautioned to avoid activities that predispose them to risks and other dire consequences.

The University extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, students, and friends of the late Prosper Owusu.
