Okyere Darko-Mensah: I’ve not asked MMDAs to pay for my dad’s funeral

The Western Regional Minister says the public should disregard a memo asking MMDAs to contribute towards his father’s funeral costs

The Western Regional Minister, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah, has categorically denied appealing for contributions towards the final funeral rites for his late father, Nana Boanyina Adusei II, the Boanimhene.

A memo to that effect has been circulating on social media, reportedly from the Western Regional Co-ordinating Council and addressed to leaders of certain metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies in the Western Region.

The memo says: “It has been decided that your MMDA is to contribute the following amount towards the final funeral rites” of the late father of the regional minister.

The MMDAs were directed to make their payments to the regional accountant for the regional co-ordinating council by Monday (20 September 2021) at the very latest.

However, speaking on The Asaase Breakfast Show this morning (Thursday 16 September), Okyere Darko-Mensah described the letter as “fake” and said it was created by “disingenuous” individuals.

“I’ve seen the memo flying around. I’ve checked, and nothing like that has been written and submitted to me. There is no seal on the letter … all my letters have a seal on them.

“Clearly, it is fake and disingenuous. I’ve asked [the regional co-ordinating council staff] to investigate it.

“I’ve not made any such request. It’s false,” the minister stressed.

The public relations department in the minister’s office has also issued a statement buttressing Okyere Darko-Mensah’s interview on Asaase Radio.
