Police hold service for 11 fallen heroes

The 11 officers died in the line of duty in various parts of the country. Present at the service were Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and the IGP

The Ghana Police Service held a memorial service on 2 November 2021 to honor some personnel of the service who died this year in the line of duty.

Present at the service was the Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia who laid a wreath at the police cenotaph grounds at the Police Training School in Accra. The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare also laid a wreath including the families of the departed officers.

The solemn ceremony was also attended by some government officials, families and loved ones of the fallen officers, personnel from the Ghana Police Service as well as some past senior officers of the service. In all 11 personnel who died this year while in active service were honored.

They include, the late Chief Inspector Abedego Kofi Kechire, who died on 6 August 2021 while escorting an advance team of the Speaker of Parliament to Wa in the Upper West Region. He was involved in a road crash at Juaso in the Ashanti Region.

The others are Chief inspector James Issaka Aroma, General Constable Iddrisu Gafaru, General Corporal Charles Adjei Osekere together were also involved in a fatal accident while responding to a robbery attack on the Walewale-Bolgatanga road. They died while responding to treatment at the Tamale Government Hospital. General Sergeant Moses Tetteh Nartey died after he was shot by armed robbers when he was responding to a distress call on the 1 October at Pramkese in the Eastern Region.

General Lance Corporal Martin Baba was shot dead by a group of armed men on 21 June 2021, while escorting a billion van at the Obuasi Asokwa Junction in the Central Region. General Constable Kwarteng Abebrese Nantwi Collins succumbed to a heart failure while on election patrol duty in the Ahafo Region on 7 December 2020.

Lance Corporal Emmanuel Osei was shot on 14 June 2021, while escorting a bullion van at Jamestown in the Greater Accra region.

The rest are General Constable Francis Odoi who was knocked down by a car on the Techiman- Kumasi highway.

General Constable Amos Martey Niganoko was also knocked down by a car while General Constable Ernest Newton Dwamena died on 29 September in a motor bike accident while on an anti-robbery operational duty in the Savanna region.

The Police Memorial Day is a day set aside to celebrate serving officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
