Resolve land dispute in Lukula, Mamprugu youth urge government

The youth alleged that the people of Lukula and its environs, who are Mamprusis and Tampulimas, continue to suffer a series of attacks by the Gonjas after an unsuccessful bid to part of the Mamprugu Moaduri district in the North East Region during its creation

The youth of Mamprugu have urged the government to “bring to finality the over 90-year-old disputed territory by carving it to the North East Region in order to save lives” in Lukula and its environs.

The disputed land in Lukula and its environs is administratively in the North Gonja district of the Savanna Region but traditionally under the North East regional House of Chiefs.

The youth were addressing a press conference in Janga in the West Mamprusi municipality on 4 June. They bemoaned that law enforcement agencies have not effected any arrests in the recent dispute although some victims have been murdered in Lukula and its environs.

A press statement from the youth said, “We the youth, chiefs and people of Mamprugu have demonstrated good faith in the resolution of these disputes by restraining ourselves and have followed successive governments for a peaceful resolution of the 93-year-old territorial dispute without violence.”

The youth alleged that the people of Lukula and its environs, who are Mamprusis and Tampulimas, continue to suffer a series of attacks by the Gonjas after an unsuccessful bid to part of the Mamprugu Moaduri district in the North East Region during its creation.

The statement alleged that, “The constant threats of war and violence coupled with the deliberate deprivation of development along the disputed zone by the North Gonja district assembly prompted agitation by the people in affected communities.”

The Soo planning committee secretary, Salifu Saaka Mahamudu, urged the public to refrain from associating the vice president, Mahamudu Bawumia, with the land disputes saying the problem precedes his tenure.

He said, “Mahamudu Bawumia has no hand in this matter. The case in question is even older than the vice president. He cannot meddle in the case. We always follow due process to have this issue resolved once and for all…we never involve the politicians.”
