#SafeMotorway4All: Parliament approves US$338 million loan for Accra-Tema motorway redevelopment

The redevelopment of the Accra-Tema Motorway is expected to enhance economic efficiency by facilitating smoother transportation of goods and passengers, leading to reduced costs

Parliament has approved a loan agreement of US$338 million for the rehabilitation and expansion of the Accra-Tema motorway and other roads in the country.

The loan is also expected to be used to complete the Tetteh Quashie interchange, the construction of the Teshie link interchange, the construction of the Community 18 interchange, the construction of the Lashie-bi interchange and eight toll booths, the construction of ten new footbridges, and others.

Speaking to Asaase News, the chairman of the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kennedy Osei Nyarko, said, “Government has already set aside some money to get the project started. So definitely, this is some good news for all of us.”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if by next week Monday, we see the contractor on site doing clearance.”

The contract was, however, awarded to a local construction company, Maripoma Enterprise Limited.

“Maripoma is a big, well-experienced company with all the requisite experience that you will need. As we speak now, Maripoma is a local company, so they will deal with local contractors and the money will be retained in the country. It’s a good initiative that all of us must support, “Osei Nyarko added.

The upgraded motorway would boost supply chain efficiency, cut transportation costs, stimulate economic growth, attract and create jobs benefiting local communities.

The Asaase Radio public interest campaign known as the #SafeMotorway4All series spotlighted the importance of maintaining critical infrastructure and citizens’ power in bringing about change.
