Sammy Gyamfi’s Assin North claims: EC is right, says Inusah Fuseini

Sammy Gyamfi, the communications director of the NDC, is alleging that the EC is working with the NPP to sneak an unregistered voter into the Assin North register

Inusah Fuseini, a former MP for Tamale Central, has said the national communications officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) “goofed” for alleging that the Electoral Commission is aiding the NPP to sneak an unregistered voter into the Assin North voter roll.

According to Sammy Gyamfi, the aspirant Charles Opoku is not a registered voter in the Assin North Constituency, adding that the “illegal” move will help the aspirant contest in the NPP parliamentary primary to select a candidate for the Assin North by-election.

The Electoral Commission has since described the claim as baseless and an attempt to malign its integrity.

Below is the EC statement:

EC is right

Appearing on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (7 June), Inusah said: “I think the Electoral Commission is right on this matter.”

“Sammy Gyamfi too is relying on the practice, but the practice cannot override the law and that interpretation put on the provision by the EC appears to be right,” Fuseini told co-host Benjamin Offei-Addo.

He added: “Our attention was drawn to the form, and again when you read the declaration on the form, it doesn’t seem to suggest that the candidate who is being nominated should be a registered candidate from the constituency.”
