Teacher unions’ strike: KNUST Basic School closed down

A statement issued by the KNUST on Thursday (29 January) says the closure will take effect from Tuesday 30 January

The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has closed down its basic school, an official statement has said.

The closure comes amidst the ongoing industrial action by various unions within the educational sector.

A statement issued by the KNUST on Thursday (29 January) says the closure will take effect from Tuesday 30 January.

“Following the declaration of industrial action by the Teachers and Educational Workers Union of the Trades Union Congress (TEWU-TUC), Senior Staff Association -Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG, and the Ghana Association of University Administrators.”

“I write to inform the University Community and the general public that the KNUST Basic School is being closed down, effective Tuesday 30 January 2024 until further notice,” the statement said.

Ongoing strike

At least four teacher unions have declared a nationwide strike over government’s inability to meet the deadline for their demands for the payment of Cost of Living Allowance (COLA).

This follows the expiration of a June 30 deadline the unions gave government.

The unions are the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT),

Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT).
