Timing for introduction of E-Levy wrong, says IMANI

The policy think tank believes Ghanaians may accept the policy if the rate is pegged at 0.5% or 0.7 % instead of the current rate of 1.75%

Franklin Cudjoe, the president of IMANI Africa has suggested to the government to peg the rate of the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy (E-Levy) at 0.5% or 0.7% instead of the current rate of 1.75%.

His suggestion comes on the back of recent opposition to the bill by the Minority in Parliament and a cross section of the general public.

The IMANI boss, however, believes the timing for the introduction of the E-Levy is wrong therefore the stiff opposition against the policy.

“To be frank, we have been paying a form of the E-Levy for a long while now and ordinarily people would not have had an issue with it, but the timing has been totally wrong,” Cudjoe said on Asaase Radio’s TownHall Talk show.

“The most important reason why people are reluctant to pay the E-Levy which I agree with is that our financial issues are not caused by mobilisation; the use of the monies is what has been the issue.

“The amount being billed for the E-Levy is far too much and I would have suggested a tax of about 0.5% to 0.7% as E-Levy not 1.75%” he said.
