The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has adopted the resolution demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza for the month of Ramadan, leading to a lasting, sustainable ceasefire and the immediate, unconditional release of all hostages.
Fourteen countries were in favour, zero were against it, and the United States of America was the only country to abstain.
Since 7 October 2023, over 32,333 Palestinians have been killed and about 74,000 injured in Israeli attacks on Gaza.
In a post on X, UN chief Antonio Guterres said the resolution “must be implemented” and that “failure would be unforgivable.

But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the US failure to veto the resolution is a “clear retreat” from its previous position and would hurt war efforts against Hamas as well as efforts to release over 130 hostages.
The Palestinian envoy, in emotional remarks to the UNSC, said that the approval of a ceasefire resolution needed to be a “turning point” in ending the assault on Gaza.
