V/R: NPP supporters snub police to protest against Dr Letsa’s appointment

The protesters said they are not satisfied with the minister’s leadership style over the past four years

Hundreds of governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporters in the Volta Region took to the streets of Ho on Monday to demonstrate against the reappointment of Dr Archibald Yao Letsa as regional minister-designate.

The protesters from all 18 constituencies in the region including party executives marched peacefully through the principal streets of Ho to demand the termination of Dr. Letsa’s appointment.

They subsequently submitted a petition to the party’s regional office for onward submission to the Office of the President.

The supporters said they were not satisfied with Dr Letsa’s leadership style over the past four years hence the need to change him.

Gladstone Azorkor who read the petition on behalf of the demonstrators leveled numerous allegations against Dr. Letsa and called for his removal.

Police order

Police in the region had earlier warned the public from taking part in today’s protest. A statement issued by the Police explained that it will not be prudent to embark on such protest due to COVID-19.

“Information reaching the Volta regional police command indicate that an unknown group intends to demonstrate on the streets of Ho township on Monday 25 January, 2021 to register their displeasure on the nomination of Hon. Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa as the Volta Regional minister-designate,” the statement read.

It added:  “And whereas the command per any properly organised special event by members of the public is duty-bound to provide security for law abiding citizens to engage in such legitimate activities like demonstrations and processions, the upsurge in COVID-19 cases across the country and particularly the Volta region makes it obvious that such an event will endanger public health and safety.

“In view of the above, the command is resolved to promote public health and safety. Accordingly, an intended ENOUGH IS ENOUGH demonstration in Ho has not been sanctioned by the command and all must take note and be warned of the consequences of non compliance.”
