VIDEO+PICTURES: Bawumia steals the show at Akwasidae

The festival is celebrated on a Sunday, once every six weeks at the Manhyia palace. It was the first time Bawumia attended the Akwasidae of the Ashanti Kingdom

Vice-president Mahamudu Bawumia stole the show on Sunday at the Akwasidae celebrations held at the Manhyia Palace in the Ashanti Region.

Accompanied by over 80 New Patriotic Party (NPP) MPs, the jubilant crowd mobbed Bawumia and his wife Samira at the grounds and hailed him for the role he is playing in government.

The festival is celebrated on a Sunday, once every six weeks at the palace. It was the first time Bawumia attended the Akwasidae of the Ashanti Kingdom.

Bawumia has had a very personal relationship with the King of Ashanti, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, who he considers as a father.

During the funeral of Bawumia’s mother in 2021, Otumfuo despite sending a high-powered delegation, issued a release to commiserate with the family.

Gratitude for show of love

A visibly elated Bawumia called on the rank and file of the NPP in the region to continue to forge ahead in unity.

He urged NPP supporters to in the spirit of party unity and cohesion continue to work in unison ahead of the 2024 polls.

“I am humbled by the surprising and amazing support. It is a big statement you have made,” Bawumia told the party supporters ahead of the Akwasidae celebration. “Let me commend the constituency chairmen and other executives in the Ashanti Region for this support.”

“I exist because of you. The organisation of this welcome was done in unity between chairman Wontumi and Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, and that is very commendable. It is only the NPP that can beat itself and therefore unity in Ashanti is important ahead of 2024 polls,” he said.
