Walewale: Missing five-year-old girl found, suspect arrested

The police say the mother of the suspect had been exerting increasing pressure on her son to produce grandchildren for her before she dies

The police have arrested a 26-year-old man, Solomon Awumbriga, for allegedly abducting a five-year-old schoolgirl who had been missing since 21 February in Walewale.

The case of the missing girl caused fear and panic in West Mamprusi as parents threatened to withdraw their wards from schools in the municipality to protect them.

The suspect, a police spokesman said, was arrested on 18 March at Mirigu in the Kassena-Nankana West District of the Upper East Region after pictures of the child were published.

Police investigators say the suspect had told his relatives and neighbours that the five-year-old was his daughter.

Lured into vehicle

The North East regional police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Robert Anabiik Anmain, told Asaase News that the mother of the suspect had been putting increasing pressure on her son to produce grandchildren for her before she dies.

“Our investigations so far reveal that he met the child returning from school and lured her into a vehicle and took her to his village called Mirigu,” ASP Anmain said.

“So far, the information we picked indicated that the mother of the suspect had warned him to produce a grandchild for her, else, if she should die, he shouldn’t be present at her funeral.

“Maybe, that engineered him [sic] to do what he did but we are still investigating,” ASP Anmain said.

The police say that the child is in good condition and has since been handed over to her parents following a medical examination.
