We will boycott Atta Mills tenth anniversary, says Cadman Mills

President Akufo-Addo is expected to commission the refurbished Asomdwee Park on Sunday (24 July)

The family of the late president John Evans Atta Mills has served notice that members will not attend the tenth-anniversary ceremony in honour of their late brother because they have not been invited to the event, scheduled to take place at Asomdwee Park, Accra, on Sunday 24 July 2022.

Dr Cadman Mills, the twin brother of the late president, made this announcement in Cape Coast on Friday (22 July 2022), when he was installed as the new family head (Ebusuapanyin) of the Nkuma Kyereba Twidan family, the late president’s maternal family.

He said although no one can prevent members from attending the anniversary celebration, the family will not attend an event to which it has not been invited.

Cadman Mills said he was outraged that the family was neither consulted nor involved in arrangements for the renovation of Professor Mills’s graveyard and in the planning of the tenth-anniversary ceremony.

As Ebusuapanyin and successor to his late brother, he said, he has therefore asked all family members not to attend Sunday’s event.

He also called on Ghanaians to boycott the anniversary celebration in solidarity with the Mills family.

Mills’s remains “not desecrated”

Meanwhile, the Coastal Development Authority (CODA) has refuted claims that it has desecrated the body of the late president. CODA is engaged in renovation work at Asomdwee Park.

According to CODA, it liaised with the state institutions in charge of state monuments before embarking on the renovation.

“The Coastal Development Authority, acting upon a directive from President Akufo-Addo, prioritised the renovation of the burial grounds of the late Professor Atta Mills, former president of the republic,” a statement from CODA said.

“We wish to state that the grave was not opened and therefore no desecration of the body of the former president, His Excellency John Evans Atta Mills, has taken place.”

The Coastal Development Authority’s statement came after Samuel Atta Mills, the second brother of the late president and MP for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem, accused CODA and Koku Anyidoho, a former aide to President Mills, of tampering with the tomb of the former president.

President Akufo-Addo is expected to commission the refurbished Asomdwee Park on Sunday (24 July).

The commissioning will coincide with the unveiling of a tombstone for Professor Mills, whose grave lies in Asomdwee Park.
