Francis-Xavier Sosu, the MP for Madina has described the death of the late Justice Samuel Marful-Sau as a big blow to the judiciary.
The MP who doubles as a human rights lawyer said the late Justice of the Supreme Court was an inspiration to many young lawyers in the country.
Commenting on Facebook on Marful-Sau’s demise, Xavier-Sosu said: “I took this picture with His Lordship Justice Samuel Marful-Sau when I was called to the Bar in 2010. He was an inspiration to me and many of us young lawyers at the Bar.
“Ghana has indeed lost a great legal brain. Rest In Peace Your Lordship Justice Samuel Marful-Sau. You lived. You served and I pray that the mercies of God will find you so you find eternal rest. God be with you till we meet again.”
Background
Justice Samuel Marful-Sau passed away on Tuesday (10 August 2021) after a short illness. He was 64 years old at the time of his demise.
He played a critical role in the system for delivering justice in the Republic of Ghana. Notable among his list of experiences was his membership of the Election 2020 petition panel that upheld the retention of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a validly elected president, following a lawsuit filed by John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in last year’s general election.
Marful-Sau was born in Assin Edubiase in the Central Region in 1957. After qualifying as a barrister-at-law in 1984, he worked in the office of the Provisional National Defence Council and entered into private legal practice before being called to the high court bench in June 2002.
He became an Appeal Court judge in 2006 and in 2018 he was appointed a justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana by His Excellency President Akufo-Addo.
While in private practice, his areas of expertise included: nationality, immigration, corporate, commercial and insurance law. He remained in private legal practice until June 2002, when he was called to the bench as a high court judge.
Reform-minded
Justice Marful-Sau was a member of the Law Reform Commission from August 1998 to October 2005 and a member of the Ghana Frequency Regulation Control Board from 1993 to 1998, while in private legal practice.
He therefore rose through the ranks as a high court judge to a justice of the Court of Appeal, serving in that capacity from November 2006 to 2018, when he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana.
Justice Marful-Sau served as a Justice of the Supreme Court from 2018 until his demise.
