Yawhima SDA primary re-opens as Sunyani MCE donates nose masks

The school, which was closed since Monday 20 February was re-opened after John Ansu Kumi, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) presented 40,000 nose masks to pupils and teachers

Academic work has resumed at the  Yawhima Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) primary and junior high school in the Sunyani Municipality.

The school, which was closed since Monday 20 February was re-opened after John Ansu Kumi, the Sunyani Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) presented 40,000 nose masks to pupils and teachers.

Nana Ansu Ababio, the chief of Yawhima ordered the closure of the school which is located along the Sunyani-Techiman highway due to the poor nature of that particular section of the road and health hazard it poses to the pupils and teachers.

The chief was concerned that the dust from the untarred road posed health risks to the pupils and teachers. He said it could lead to an outbreak of respiratory diseases if the problem is not addressed.

A visit by the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Tuesday morning to the school showed that teaching and learning had resumed. The school children wore their nose masks.

Some pupils told the GNA they were excited that the school had re-opened. They expressed appreciation to the MCE for his intervention with nose masks.

In an interview with the MCE, he told the GNA that the provision of nose masks was part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the dust.

“We really understand and appreciate their concerns because it is glaring that the sea of dust remains the order of the day, thereby making teaching and learning arduous and ineffective to some extent,” he stated.

Kumi said he had extensively engaged SEMS Construction Limited, the construction company working on the road project, to at least sprinkle some water  on the road to minimize the dust. He urged drivers to reduce their speed to minimize the dust.

He added that he and the Member of Parliament for Sunyani East constituency as well as the Bono Regional minister are working together to ensure that the contractor completes the project.

He implored residents of communities along the road to remain patient, saying “we have all witnessed some progress of work done on the road, and we would soon see the tarring of road,” he stated.
