Eight dead in reprisal attacks in renewed Bawku conflict

Asaase News sources say the conflict began on Saturday 17 December 2022, after an elderly man and his son were attacked by faceless individuals at Sinateng

At least eight people have been reportedly killed in a reprisal attack in Bawku in the Upper East Region, while several others sustained various degrees of gunshot wounds following renewed fight between two feuding tribes.

Asaase News sources say the conflict began on Saturday 17 December 2022, after an elderly man and his son were attacked by faceless individuals at Sinateng, a suburb of Bawku.

Reprisal attacks

The death of the elderly man caused a reprisal attack the night of same day resulting in the killing of five others.

Two more deaths were also recorded on Sunday 18 December 2022, from a spillover despite increased military-police patrols in the municipality.

“The fight was serious on the ground. Bullets were just flying everywhere. Even the security agencies could not patrol on the ground so they used a jet fighter,” a resident who spoke on grounds of anonymity told Asaase News.

Fear among residents

Residents say they are living in fear and are unable to work which is impacting socio-economic activities.

Residents have had to flee the town in fear of their lives, seeking safety in surrounding settlements or locking themselves in their rooms.

Traders, who primarily travel to the Bawku market to buy and sell from nearby towns in the Upper East Region, Burkina Faso and Togo, have also fled the town for safety reasons since the recent violence.

Shops on major streets within the Bawku municipality have been closed and the streets deserted.

Broken power supply

Power supply to some parts of the municipality has been disrupted since Saturday’s gun attack. The electricity situation has also affected other towns including Garu, Gambaga, Nalerigu, Bunkprugu and Pusiga.

The police are yet to confirm the number of deaths in the renewed tribal clashes to Asaase News.
