Alan Kyerematen: Going independent will be “game changer” in Ghana’s politics

The former trade minister has jumped the NPP ship, barely a month after he withdrew from the party’s presidential primaries citing bias

Former trade minister, Alan Kyerematen has said his candidature as an independent in the upcoming 2024 elections will be a “game changer” in Ghana’s politics.

Kyerematen has jumped the NPP ship, barely a month after he withdrew from the party’s presidential primaries citing bias and has announced his bid to contest the 2024 presidential election as an independent candidate.

Speaking with Asaase News’s Wilberforce Asare on Friday (29 September), Kyerematen said his appeal cuts across the various political parties which will help him cause a stir in the upcoming presidential election.

“I think I have played my politics well; I have been able to create a certain relationship across the political divide, even within the NDC I can make a significant inroads …” he said.

“But more significantly is that the floating voters in this country are quite a lot, they are estimated to be about 25% of the general voting population. So that is also a constituency that I have an advantage in…”

“But to anchor this all, is the fact that my movement is a youth-led movement and as time goes on you will realise the importance of this being the most significant development in Ghana’s political history. Because currently, the young people constitute over 55% of the voter population,” Kyerematen added.
