Benyiwa-Doe was “a good friend”, says Akufo-Addo

Nana Akufo-Addo served in Parliament alongside Ama Benyiwa-Doe (aka Ama Chavez)

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has eulogised the late Ama Benyiwa-Doe, describing her as “a good friend”.

The former Central regional minister passed away at her residence in Tema on Sunday (19 September) following a brief illness, an aide confirmed.

In a Facebook post, Nana Akufo-Addo, who served in Parliament at the same time as the NDC stalwart, said: “I’m sad to hear about the news of the death of Ama Benyiwa-Doe. She was a colleague in Parliament, and a good friend. May her soul rest in perfect peace until the Last Day of the Resurrection when we shall all meet again. Amen!!”

For his part, the former president John Mahama said: “She was not only a politician, but also a gender activist and champion of women’s rights. Ama Benyiwa Doe was an embodiment of limitless courage, commitment and passion for service.”

She first entered Parliament in 1993 on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress as the MP for Gomoa West in the Central Region. She lost the seat in 1996 to an NPP candidate.

Benyiwa-Doe also served as the national women’s organiser of the NDC and was later a member of the Council of State.
