Concerns of CETAG being addressed, says Osei-Asare

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (1 August), the deputy minister of finance, Abena Osei-Asare, said the government is committed to resolving the issue amicably

The Finance Ministry has said it is working to address the concerns of the Colleges of Education Teachers Association, Ghana (CETAG).

Teachers across all 46 public Colleges of Education on Tuesday began an indefinite strike over their conditions of service.

CETAG embarked on a similar protest in January after the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission delayed negotiations for new conditions of service for more than a year.

The agreed negotiations between the two parties have since not materialised despite several letters of notice to the Ministry of Finance. The association has accused the government of acting in bad faith.

Addressing the issues

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (1 August), the deputy minister of finance, Abena Osei-Asare, said the government is committed to resolving the issue amicably.

“We are working on it,” she said. “We will collaborate and negotiate with them to see how best we can address those specific needs. These things do happen sometimes.”

“It is not government’s intention that they lay down their tools before we address it,” Osei-Asare added. “But it is something that we are taking seriously and then we will make sure we look at the issue with CETAG and do the needful so that at the end of it government wins and they also win as well.”
