“Eii Ato, is this you..…again”?

Mr Forson claims that the country has not turned the corner. He bases his assertion on a misunderstanding of the idiom “turned the corner”

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ajumako Enyan Esiam Constituency, Ato Forson, seems to have landed himself in another linguistic quagmire. During the recent mid-year budget presentation, Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta asserted that Ghana had turned the corner in terms of the performance of major economic indicators.

However, Mr Forson disagreed, claiming that the country had not turned the corner. The Minority leader appeared to be basing his assertion on a misunderstanding of the idiom “turned the corner”.

The Cambridge Dictionary thus defines “turn the corner”: “If a situation turns the corner, it starts to improve after a difficult period”.

It is clear to all Ghanaians that things are starting to improve after a particularly difficult year. The cedi is stabilizing against major trading currencies, even winning the title of best performing currency in December 2022. Inflation has softened and fuel prices have fallen significantly in recent pricing windows.

Mr Forson’s adamant refusal to acknowledge that Ghana has “turned the corner” or things are improving, will come as no surprise to those who may recall his difficulties with the Queen’s language during the vetting of the Minister of State at the Ministry of Finance, Mohammed Amin Adam.

His struggles as he stated incoherently, “… tricycles that don’t have tyres that can not fry is cannot be find,” raised eyebrows and drew gales of laughter from the public; as well as criticism from members of his own party, the NDC.

While Mr. Forson has been an active voice in parliamentary discussions, his recent linguistic challenge has once again drawn negative attention to him. It remains to be seen how this latest incident will impact his credibility as a parliamentarian.
