Five killed, several others injured after attack in Binduri

The DCE for Binduri has said officials will ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book and made to face justice

Five people, comprising two men and three women, have been killed in Atuba, a suburb of Binduri District of the Upper East Region, by unknown gunmen. The attack happened on Monday (22 January 2024).

Many others have also sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at health-care facilities.

The victims, mostly traders, were reportedly travelling in a vehicle from the direction of Bawku township to the Atuba market to undertake normal trading activities.

Upon reaching the Atuba community, the gunmen allegedly fired at them sporadically, killing five on the spot and injuring others.

Ayinga Abagre Yakubu, the district chief executive for Binduri, who confirmed the news to the Ghana News Agency, said that the individuals behind the attack and the reasons for the attack were unknown.

He said officials have begun investigating the incident to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to book.

ā€œWhen we got to the scene, the attackers were gone and [the way] the situation was, we could not get anybody to ask questions. So we had to attend to the injured persons, who have been sent to the hospital for treatment. We are still looking into it,ā€ he said.

The reason for the latest killings is unknown. However, GNA sources have linked it to the recent murder of five people in Bawku in a renewed chieftaincy clash at the weekend.

At least 200 people have lost their lives, many others have been injured and property has been destroyed since the Bawku chieftaincy conflict re-erupted in November 2021.
