Former NPP MPs: Give us voting rights at congress

According to the former NPP MPs, the party’s constitution makes provision for them to become part of the decision-making body

The former Members of Parliament of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) want the party to accord them rights as delegates and also recognise them as an “external branch” of the party.

According to them, the party’s constitution makes provision for them to become part of the decision-making body of the party, hence their request.

The secretary of the group, Collins Owusu Amankwah, said a petition is being presented to the general secretary of the party for onward review by the NPP’s constitution review committee. The petition when accepted will see all former members of Parliament, dating as far back as 1997 cast ballot during the party’s elections.

Amankwah said the group believed “that the constitution must reflect the aspirations and potentials of the party and having regard to the fact that we are registered members of the party, we have acted in our capacity as members who represented our various constituencies, we have contributed and we are still contributing both in kind and in cash for the party, either in opposition or in government, so we think that the time is rife to be recognized under article 7 clause 27 of our constitution and also Article 15”.

The group has therefore appealed to the “venerable members of the national council to look into our petition to grant us this right”.

The former MP for Manhyia North constituency said their inclusion into the party will see a collaboration with the party’s conflict resolution committee, “to work on some members who sometimes become disgruntled”.
