Gabby to NPP: Opposing candidature of Fomena MP dangerous

Otchere-Darko's comment comes after some party members announced they will fiercely resist any attempt by some party big wigs to impose the independent MP on the constituents in the lead up to the 2024 elections

Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, a stalwart of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has said any attempt to oppose the candidature of the Fomena MP Andrew Amoako-Asiamah will be detrimental to the purpose of the party.

His comment comes after some party members announced they will fiercely resist any attempt by some party big wigs to impose the independent MP on the constituents in the lead up to the 2024 elections.

“Any campaign to field a candidate against the independent Fomena MP by the NPP will only expose the party as sometimes getting it all twisted regarding why we are in politics in the first place. We can’t behave as if internal democracy, limited to delegates, is an end to itself,” Otchere-Darko posted on Facebook.

“We like it and patronise it because it serves as the best means to test the acceptability and popularity of a candidate for the ultimate race: general elections. In other words, the whole idea of having parliamentary primaries is to choose a candidate who is acceptable by the constituents (including the generality of party supporters) to represent the party in Parliament.

“You deselected him when he was the NPP MP, he ran as an independent and still beat the official party candidate in the next general elections. Not only that. In this parliament of 137-137, it is he who tilts the balance of power to your side. What else can seriously matter in this equation? We are not in politics to ultimately contest against ourselves but to win to govern for all,” he added.

Alleged imposition of Fomena MP on NPP

It has been alleged that there are attempts by the leadership of the majority group in Parliament to impose Andrews Amoako Asiamah, the independent MP from Fomena, as an unopposed Parliamentary Candidate on the Fomena NPP come 2024.

At a press conference held at the party office in Adansi Fomena today, some aggrieved members of the party indicate that they are aware of attempts by the 1st Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Wusu (popularly known as Joe Wise), who is also the Member of Parliament for Bekwai, and the Majority leader in Parliament and MP for Suame Constituency, Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, to impose Asiamah on the party.

A spokesperson for the Aggrieved members,  Michael Ankapong, the NPP Fomena Constituency IT Coordinator and Youth Organizer hopeful, stated: “We are also aware of attempts by some NPP Members of Parliament of nearby constituencies, including Joe Osei-Wusu of Bekwai, who has been an Independent MP himself in the past and Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, the MP for Suame and Majority Leader, to reconcile Asiamah and his close associates with the NPP party leadership in the Fomena constituency, ostensibly to pave the way for Asiamah’s return to the party and ultimately gaining control of the party in Fomena.”
