Ghana’s Black Loopers shine in African Games table tennis opener

Four of Ghana's five female representatives have made it to the round of 32 of the competition

Ghana’s 13th African Games campaign kicked off with a thrilling start at the Accra International Conference Centre with table tennis. The nation’s male and female teams, known as the Black Loopers, left impressed as they competed in Day 1 of the eight-day table tennis event, scheduled from 3–10 March as part of the broader Games running from 8–23 March, 2024.

In the women’s category, Ghana’s contingent displayed remarkable skill, securing victories across the board. However, Juanita Borteye encountered a tough challenge, facing off against Mariam Alhodaby, a formidable opponent and a 2023 International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) African Championships Women’s Singles Semi-Finalist. Despite the setback, Ghana’s Celia Baah-Danso dominated her match against Kenya’s Lisa Nasimuyu with a convincing 3-0 win, advancing to the next round.

Meanwhile, Loretta Davis of Liberia struggled against Ghana’s Bernice Borley Borquaye, who emerged victorious in their encounter. Additionally, Eva Adom-Amankwaa secured a hard-fought victory against Angola’s Isabel Alibino, while Cynthia Kwabi displayed a stellar performance, defeating Sifa Nafula to progress to the Round of 32.

As the competition intensifies, the upcoming matches promise thrilling encounters. Celia Baah-Danso is set to face off against Algeria’s Malissa Nasri, while Bernice Borley Borquaye prepares to challenge Sarah Hanffou of Cameroon. Eva Adom-Amankwaa will test her skills against Hanitra Raharimanana of Madagascar, and Cynthia Kwabi will go head-to-head with Angola’s Ruth Tavares in the next round.

In the men’s category, Ghana’s Emmanuel Commey and Samuel Akayade demonstrated remarkable resilience, securing their spots in the Round of 32. Commey exhibited exceptional performance, claiming victories over Joseph Sebatindira of Uganda and Bertin Mingashanga of the Democratic Republic of Congo with scores of 3-1 in both encounters. Meanwhile, Samuel Akayade showcased his prowess by defeating Algeria’s Stephane Ouaiche, further solidifying Ghana’s presence in the tournament.

The Ghanaian contingent’s outstanding performance in the opening matches sets the stage for an exhilarating journey ahead in the African Games table tennis event.
