Let’s inspire girls to go into STEM education, says Keta education director

The education boss in Keta, Kwasi Avudzivi, said opportunities await women and girls in the area of STEM, thus the need to encourage them to be interested in learning it

The municipal director of the Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region, Gerhard Kwasi Avudzivi, has appealed for support for girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

He said opportunities await women and girls in the area of STEM, thus the need to encourage them to be interested in learning STEM.

Speaking at a STEM fair held in Abor SHS, in the Keta Municipality, on Friday 31 March and Saturday 1 April, Avudzivi said the fair “brings to mind the need to speed up the enrolment of girls in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.”

He said, “let us inspire our girls to venture into the sciences as there are a lot of opportunities awaiting them.”

He suggested that “let’s rebuild the skills of our students in science, technology, engineering and innovation. Government should facilitate the adoption of policies conducive to the development of STEM.”

Avudzivi stated that “as stakeholders of education, we must incentivize research into grand challenges and set up funding alliances for STEM.”

The fair was organised by Opportunity and Risk Management Institute, a non-governmental research and training centre based in Accra. In all, the fair hosted 135 science students from 18 junior and senior high schools from the southern part of the Volta Region and Dakuman D/A JHS in Accra.

The spokesperson for ORMI, Raymond Glover Letsah, said the fair is aimed to project young inventors and bringing them closer to industry players to “catch them young.”
