Meet Engracia Mofuman, the Ghanaian competing to be the next Miss Universe

The competition is hosted by the Miss Universe Organisation, which describes itself as "a global, inclusive organisation that celebrates all cultures, backgrounds, and religions"

The 71st Miss Universe pageant will be taking place today (14 January) in New Orleans, USA, and out of the 86 contestants, nine are from Africa.

The competition is hosted by the Miss Universe Organisation, which describes itself as “a global, inclusive organisation that celebrates all cultures, backgrounds, and religions.”

Representing Ghana is 27-year-old Engracia Afua K. Mofuman, a professional model and a French, English, Spanish, and Portuguese translator.

She has a master’s degree in international relations. She created the #PowerInThePencil Project, a drive aimed at teaching illiterate children in Ghana how to read and write, the most basic form of education.

Mofuman also dedicates much of her time to service work. She works with medical professionals at the Nushum Female Prison to help inmates get screenings for chronic diseases like hypertension and diabetes.

On her current feat, she said she was “walking on one of the world’s most powerful stages to represent her country’s tribe of powerful women in all its majestic splendor. It was more than a dream come true.”

The highly anticipated event will feature almost 90 women from around the globe vying for the Miss Universe crown through the process of personal statements, in-depth interviews, and various categories, including evening gowns and swimwear.
