Mr Eazi: Female artistes in Ghana lack funding

Mr Eazi says as a male artiste, he can just wear his t-shirt with shorts and that’s it. But female artistes have to spend more money on their appearance

Females in the Ghanaian musical scene need funds and not talent to blow up in the sector, Nigerian singer Mr Eazi has said.

Unlike Nigeria and elsewhere in the world, female musicians in Ghana are unable to thrive in the music industry as compared to their male counterparts. Often times, they fizzle out of the scene after a couple of hit songs.

Speaking in an exclusive interview on The Asaase Breakfast Show, the musician and entrepreneur explained that the challenges female musicians faced was not due to lack of “talent”, as “there’s a lot of talent in Ghana” but rather a lack of “funding.”

“It’s just funding … the difference a lot of time, come down to funding,” Mr Eazi said.

“As male artiste you could see me, I can just wear this t-shirt with my shorts and then that’s it; I don’t need to do anything extra. But as a female artiste, you have to spend more money for your appearance, you have to spend more money, the industry is also not screwed in favour of the female artistes,” he added.

The Banku music pioneer also noted that “female artistes have to put in twice the amount of work the male artistes put in, twice the amount of finance the male artiste puts in and unfortunately, there’s not a lot of finance to support female artistes.”

He concluded that, “the missing piece is for there to be that finance that could go towards female artistes.”

Asked who his favourite Ghanaian female singer was Mr. Eazi said, “I think it’s still Efya. I feel Efya is still undisputed.”
