One in eight marriages ends in divorce, says life coach

According to the last census two years ago, there are about 8.3 million registered marriages in Ghana

The co-founder of Lead Afrique International, Michael Ohene-Effah, has said that one in eight Ghanaian marriages ends up in either separation or divorce.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Friday (17 November), Ohene-Effah said, “according to the last census two years ago, there are about 8.3 million registered marriages in this country.”

“Now of that 8.3 million, about 500, 000 are formally divorced, and about 400, 000 marriages are separated,” he added.

According to the census, the ratio between the genders is higher for women in terms of separation than for men.

“It shows that we are not tackling the roots of what is going to give birth to a prosperous, thriving, united nation.”

Ohene-Effah said that there is a need for larger interventions to support families to stay together. “When you want to destroy a nation, the best way to start is with families,” he said.

“Some causes of divorce are sex, money, household chores, managing family businesses, and how to raise children,” the life coach added.
