Their job is to go to school, study hard, others would say and make something good of the opportunity provided. But that is not the story of the pupils of the St Paul’s Roman Catholic Junior High School at Tokuroano in the Krachi District of the Oti Region.
The construction of their mud structured classroom is self-initiated by the pupils and staff of the school after failed attempts to get a new classroom block.
Humphrey Agah, the headteacher of the school, told Asaase Radio’s regional correspondent Solomon Ahiable that “the school started 11 years ago and since then haven’t had a structure.”
“We decided to put it upon ourselves to put up a structure, the parents contributed GHC10 each to help start up, every structure we put up breaks down so we decided to put up a permanent one this time around,” he added.
He said they have been teaching the pupils under trees, creating a lot of inconvenience anytime it rains.
The school authorities are pleading with the government for the provision of a permanent classroom unit, office, and toilet facilities to enhance effective academic work.
“We are appealing to everyone to help us, at least even if we get a three-unit classroom block. We don’t have an office, all the school items are in my home, whenever they are in need they come and pick them. Currently, what we are doing is raising a dwarf wall before we put up the structure,” Agah said.
