PLAYBACK: Israel rejects genocide accusations at World Court

Today, the ICJ hears the oral argument of Israel from the genocide case proceedings instituted by South Africa on 29 December 2023

Israel on Friday (12 January) rejected as “grossly distorted” accusations brought by South Africa at the U.N.’s top court that its military operation in Gaza is a state-led genocide campaign against the Palestinian population.

It called on judges to dismiss South Africa’s request to halt its offensive, saying it would leave it defenceless.

South Africa, which filed the lawsuit at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in December, asked judges on Thursday to impose emergency measures ordering Israel to immediately halt the offensive.

South Africa’s oral argument included but was not limited to:

  • Detailing the genocidal acts Israel was committing against Palestinians.
  • Israel intends to destroy Gaza’s population.
  • Branding Israel’s Netanyahu as a ‘genocidal inciter’
  • Seeking an emergency suspension of Israeli military action in Gaza

Netanyahu, Prime Minister of Israel, has since responded to South Africa’s argument to the court, saying, “The hypocrisy of South Africa knows no bounds… Where was South Africa when millions of people were murdered and displaced from their homes in Syria and Yemen, and by whom? By the partners of Hamas.”

Today, the 12th of January, Israel is presenting their oral argument to the court.

British Lawyer Malcolm Shaw represents Israel, is considered one of the world’s leading experts on international law and has appeared before the ICJ in the past.
