Prioritise medical check-ups, says Dr Tettey

Agartha Asare, a 59-year-old beneficiary, stated that but for the health screening she would not have noticed that her blood pressure had shot up again

A specialist physician at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Eugene Tettey, has urged Ghanaians to make medical check-ups a routine to prevent future health complications.

He stated that, during medical check-ups, health personnel are able to identify hidden or underlying diseases and provide relevant medical care and advice to avert complications.

ā€œRegular checks are very important. They prevent a lot of difficult complications in theĀ human body. It is only when you get to know whatever is happening inside your body that youĀ can take steps to prevent potential complications,ā€ he said.

Tettey gave the advice on Saturday during a health screening exercise organised by the RotaryĀ Club of Accra, Cantonments, to commemorate its tenth anniversary.

The exercise provided tips on nutrition, expert medical advice and free medical consultation and medicines to about 200 people in Oduman in the Ga West municipal assembly and its environs. The club chose Oduman for the exercise because of the identified need for healthcare services in the area.

The specialist physician said the human body is a biological machine, and like any machine, it needs routine maintenance to remain in good shape, hence the need for medical check-ups.

He emphasised the importance of visiting the hospital twice, or at least once, every year for a medical check up.

Tettey said medical practice and health delivery in Ghana has improved in recent times. HeĀ encouraged Ghanaians to trust the countryā€™s health system and patronise it.

Samuel Agyarko Larbi, the president of the Rotary Club of Accra, Cantonments, stated that as part of theĀ celebrations, the club has carried out several humanitarian projects including donations, healthĀ screenings exercises and drilling of boreholes.

Larbi said the programme was carried out in collaboration with health professionals from theĀ Oduman Polyclinic. Beneficiaries of the health screening who had critical health issues were transported to the hospital inĀ an ambulance for further medical care. The club bore their medical bills.

The president of the club underscored the need for people to eat well, get enough rest and adhere to advice from healthcare practitioners.

Agartha Asare, a 59-year-old beneficiary, stated that but for the health screening she would not have noticed that her blood pressure had shot up again.

She said, ā€œDuring the screening, it was realised that my BP was high and so, I was asked to go home andĀ resume taking my BP drugs which I had stopped taking for a while.ā€

The chief imam of Oduman-Suncity, Zakariya Alhassan Adams, praised the club for the health screening, urging it to organise it regularly.

Adie Hamidu, a 78-year-old resident, said many people in the community cannot afford medical services due to financial challenges.

He urged organisations and philanthropists to learn from the clubā€™s kind gesture and give back toĀ society.

The medical team at the programme told the Ghana News Agency that hypertension, diabetes and general body pains were the most common health issues recorded during the exercise.
