Salakofe tidal waves: Residents appeal for support

The assembly member for Salakofe says residents have been calling for the construction of a sea defence system since 2017

Salakofe, a fishing community in the Ketu South Municipality, is reeling after tidal waves swept through the town on Sunday (10 March), submerging half the community in seawater.

Asar Ebenezer, the assembly member for Salakofe, expressed frustration over the recurring disaster, highlighting the community’s pleas for a sea defence project that has gone unanswered since 2017.

“This is not the first time this thing is happening,” Ebenezer lamented in an interview with Asaase News.

“It started in 2017 and we called for a sea defence project, but up till now, nothing’s been done, so we are urging the people involved that they should take care of themselves and move their belongings to their neighbours so that it won’t affect their belongings.”

Ebenezer’s concerns extend beyond immediate displacement. “Some cemeteries along the roadside are being flooded by these same tidal waves,” he revealed, stressing the severity of the situation. “We have a lot to do.”

Displaced residents have sought shelter with loved ones in nearby villages.
